Access5830™ Access Point Channel Assignment Guidelines

With proper channel planning and adherence to installation guidelines, multiple Access5830 access points may co-exist and operate interference-free on the same tower or building.

Access5830™ Access Point Colocation Potential

ISM Band 5.8 GHz U-NII Band 5.3 Ghz Total
Default # 20 MHz Channels 6 5 11
AP Colocation potential (without Shielding Kit) 6 5 11
AP Colocation potential With shielding kit. 12 10 22

In order to maximize collocation potential, network designers should adhere to the following general guidelines. Please note that these guidelines pertain to the Access5830's default channel table which assigns 6 channels in the ISM band and 5 channels in the U-NII band with 20 MHz spacing. Please note that in certain situations it may be advantageous to change the frequencies assigned in the default channel table.

General Guidelines for Channel Assignment and Colocation

  1. Space radios by at least 5 feet (horizontal or vertical separation). The more separation the better.
  2. Allow at least two channels of separation for physically adjacent radios. In other words, adjacent radios should not use adjacent channels.
  3. Adjacent channels should be set to opposite polarizations. For example, if the radio operating on channel 1 is set to Horizontal, then the radio operating on channel 2 should be set to Vertical. This rule applies to all radios at the site regardless of their physical proximity to one another.

Shielding Kit

In cases where the network designer wishes to collocate more than 6 access points, or in cases where there is interference present from other sources, it may be necessary to shield each access point. Trango Broadband supplies a shielding kit, (Part #SHIELDKIT-1) for this purpose.

By placing a shield on every AP at the site, it is possible to collocate up to 12 access points (set to the 5.8 GHz ISM band) and up to 10 access points set to the 5.3 GHz U-NII Band.
